Quick 9 with Arccos Member, Jason Montana
Imagine standing on the tee box at one of golf’s most iconic courses, heart pounding, palms slightly sweaty, knowing this shot could make or break the round. That’s the kind of exhilarating moment that fuels Jason Montana, an Arccos golfer who’s turned data into his secret weapon on the course.
In our Quick 9 series, we take you inside the minds of passionate golfers, giving them nine questions to uncover their strategies, favorite memories, and biggest goals. Jason, an Arccos user since May 2022, has been on a remarkable journey, dropping his handicap from 15.2 to 10.9 in just a year. Let’s dive into his story and see what drives his game.
1. If you could describe your golf game in three words, what would they be?
Good getting better.
2. What is your favorite golf memory and what made it so special?
It’s tough to choose between these two.
Playing at TPC Sawgrass in the Arccos Invitational—with all the video coverage, interviews, and overall atmosphere—made me feel like a pro. Coming from behind on the second day to win was exhilarating.
Playing the Old Course at St. Andrews was truly unforgettable. I matched my lowest round ever and got lucky with perfect weather. Plus, I ended up on one of the double greens at the same time as Charlie Day—definitely a moment to remember!
3. If you could play a dream foursome with any three people—past or present—who would they be and why?
I’d go with Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon from PTI because they have endless stories and hilarious banter. Rounding out the foursome would be Lydia Ko—she’s incredibly cool, and I love watching her play.
4. What’s one part of your golf game that you take the most pride in?
My putting. It’s the part of my game that lets me down the least.
5. What’s one part of your game that has changed the most since using Arccos, and how has it changed?
My proximity to the pin on approach shots from 150-200 yards has improved significantly. While I could still hit more greens from this distance, my misses are now closer—either short chip shots or putts from just off the green.
6. Can you share an example of how you played smarter on the course due to Arccos?
I live in Colorado, so many of my rounds are played at elevation. When I travel, Arccos adjusts my club distances so that I know exactly which clubs to use at or near sea level. That adjustment has been a game-changer.
7. What’s one feature or stat you’d recommend new Arccos users check out first?
Smart Distance for each club. Knowing how far you actually hit each club is critical for making smarter decisions on the course.
8. What’s your next big golf goal, and how do you plan to achieve it?
In 2024, I dropped from a 15.2 index to 10.9—the next goal is to get into single digits. I’m using Arccos to track where I’m losing the most strokes compared to a 9 handicap, which right now is my approach game (-1.7 strokes per round) and short game (-1.2 strokes per round).
9. If you could give one piece of advice to a golfer who’s on the fence about using Arccos, what would it be?
It’s the best value in golf—without question. After using Arccos for three years, I don’t know what I’d do without it. With so many features, you're guaranteed to find something that will help improve your game. Go for it!
So, there you have it— a quick glimpse of Jason’s journey in 9 questions, from a solid golfer to a smarter, more strategic player. He’s proof that golf isn’t just about raw talent—it’s about making the right decisions, using the right tools, and embracing the grind.
